Louvain, Belgium.
Once upon a time, in the early 1970′s, many people, including myself, thought that all the “struggles” of that period were linked: the Cultural Revolution in China, the guerillas in Latin America, the Prague Spring and the East European “dissidents”, May 68, the civil rights movement, the opposition to the Vietnam war, and the nominally socialist anti-colonial movements in Africa and Asia. We also thought that the “fascist” regimes in (...) -

Saturday June 22nd 2013.
It has now been a year since I entered this embassy and sought refuge from persecution.
As a result of that decision, I have been able to work in relative safety from a US espionage investigation.
But today, Edward Snowden’s ordeal is just beginning.
Two dangerous runaway processes have taken root in the last decade, with fatal consequences for democracy.
Government secrecy has been expanding on a terrific scale.
Simultaneously, human privacy has been (...) -
JAPAN - Call for Solidarity from Tokyo’s Tatekawa Kasenshiki Park
8 May 2013, posted by John Malone
We are the homeless of Tatekawa Kasenshiki Park, in the East of Tokyo. Our park is built on top of a filled-in river, and extends lengthwise under the highway. We have built shelters and live there. In 2012, we were targeted by two violent eviction operations. Using the renovation of the park as an excuse, running water has been stopped, access to the public toilet has been prohibited for 4 months and the toilet is now closed overnight. Since the renovation work, large iron gates prohibit (...)

FRANCE - Back in NATO? Is this for real?

15 April 2008, posted by John MaloneApril 15, 2008 - Nicolas Sarkozy has gone out of his way to sound pro-American. He made a special visit in 2007 to Kennebunkport to have a cozy meeting with George W. Bush. Since neither spoke the other’s language, they must have had translators. So perhaps I might be allowed to try to translate what has been going on.
Yes, Sarkozy is using a discourse that sounds much better to American ears than that of any of his predecessors for a long time. Yes, it is now old reliable Germany with a (...)
