Mgr Samuel Ruiz, appelé « Tatic (père) Ruiz » par les Indiens auxquels il a consacré sa vie, est l’une des très grandes figures de l’épiscopat latino-américain. Pendant quelque quarante ans, il fut évêque de San Cristóbal de Las Casas dans l’Etat du Chiapas au Mexique. Il a puissamment contribué à faciliter aux Indiens la prise de conscience de leurs droits. Un moment clef en fut l’organisation du premier congrès indigène du Chiapas en 1974, auquel participèrent environ deux mille indigènes. (…)
